The Witcher Books reading order

With the introduction of Netflix’s The Witcher, this wild world of mystery and weirdness is being introduced to a whole new audience. However, executive producer and showrunner Lauren S. Hisrich’s adaptation to this beloved fantasy world has to do with the hugely successful The Witcher game franchise, developed by CD Projekt Red and establishing its importance in the spirit of the times. There is none. Instead, the Netflix show is based on the book of author Andrzej Sapkowski. And maybe fans of the show are still interested in trying out books. Well, let us help you with it!

Sapkowski has published eight Witcher books since he began writing the series in the mid-1980s, when a prominent Polish writer first submitted Wiedzmín — “The Witcher” to the fantasy magazine Fantastyka.

The Witcher Books in Order

The books featured in this Witcher Books Order article are:

Netflix The Witcher: Cast vs. Video Game Characters

However, Geralt of Rivia did not appear in The Witcher’s world until the publication of Sapkovsky’s 1990 collection of short stories (also known as Wismin). This text is currently out of print, so it’s not one of the eight books you’ll need to read to better understand the literary counterparts of the game that many fans have come to love. In fact, all the stories in this Collection Bar 1 (“The Road to No Return” about Geralt’s mother) were included in The Last Wish collection in 1993.

Last Wish / Sword of Destiny

Last wish
Sword of fate

Last Wish is the starting point for The Witcher. It’s important to note that it was published a year after the 1992 Sword of Destiny. Last Wish gets almost every story from Wiedzmín and adds more. All of these feature events that occur before the previously published Sword of Destiny. This is basically a prequel collection written in preparation for the Sword of Destiny.

After reading The Last Wish and Sword of Destiny, you’re ready to move on to the story. It consists of five novels, all of which tell stories such as Geralt, Ciri, Yennefer, Triss and Tandelion. They also introduce a series of characters that do not appear in the adaptations of CD Projekt Red. Most of them are great.

If you’re just interested in picking up what’s likely to be featured early in the TV series, a collection of short stories from Last Wish and Sword of Destiny is sufficient. However, if you want to know the inside and outside of the world and make sure you’re a true witcher enthusiast, it was set about 10 years before the game and is primarily a relationship between Geralt and Ciri. This is where most of Gerald’s story unfolds and constitutes a major component of the entire Witcher universe — at least with respect to the concept of Sapkovsky. There are five novels in turn:

Elf blood

Elf blood

The first book of the story, Blood of Elves, follows the short stories The Last Wish and Sword of Destiny. Introducing Emperor Emil Val Emraiss of Nilfgardian, who pursued Gerald’s adopted daughter, Siri, to marry her and control her natural land, Sintra. To thwart Emile’s plans, the northern monarchs meet and decide to assassinate Siri, but Geralt of Rivia is watching over her in a remote carmohen where the witches of the Wolf School live. Meanwhile, a mysterious wizard is also trying to find Ciri.

Time of contempt

Time of contempt

Time of contempt takes up where the previous novel ends. The Northern Kings are still plotting against each other to lure Nilfgard into the war, but Siri will be registered with Arezza to study magic. Ciri contacts some of the most powerful sorcerers on the continent. When the war is inevitable, she finds herself fleeing with a group of bandits known simply as Rats.

Baptism by fire

Baptism by fire

Gerald spends time in the Brokyron Forest to recover from the events of the previous book. There he and Dandelions encounter 11 archers named Milva who decide to join their group. Those who have played the game will be pleased to learn that the dwarf Zoltan Chivay is temporarily joining Geralt’s Ragtag group and the vampire Regis. The Nilfgaardian knight named Cahir is also tagged because he feels he is benefiting from Ciri. Gerald officially receives his “of Rivia” title after a spectacular battle while Ciri begins to get used to The Rats.

Swallow tower

Swallow tower

Siri was seriously injured after meeting Leo Bonhart, a bounty hunter for Nilfgard, who was hired and killed by coroner Stephen Skelen. A kind old man raises her well, Gerald’s party continues to search for Siri, and Gerald relinquishes his position as The Witcher. Sorceress’s lodge seeks control of a country called Covil, but Tris Merigold seeks information about Yennefer in Bengerberg. (Known as the Swallow Tower in the United States)

Lake maiden

Lake maiden

Ciri meets Sir Galahad, a knight of Arthagne who believes she is the woman who bears the name of the lake. The story cuts into the dream of Gerald hearing Skelen and leaving to rescue Yennefer from a distant castle. Meanwhile, Ciri tells Galahad about her time in the 11 world of Aen Elle, home of Wild Hunt. She begins to jump between the worlds to escape the world, but Eledin Blake Glass persistently chases her as she heads for the final meeting with her surrogate mother Gerald and Yennefer.

Currently, up to 7 of the 8 books. The final text is also a novel, but it’s a bit difficult to place and depends on your personal taste …

Storm season

Storm season

If you want to know everything that happens when you happen, you may want to read the stormy season right after your last wish. First published in 2013, 14 years after Sapkowski raps the saga, the Season of Storms contains stories that occur during The Last Wish’s story, but not necessarily each other. Not exactly in close proximity. But it was also written after the story was completed by Sapkovsky and contains a few hints about what’s to come, if not complete spoilers. If you’re dying to read the series in strict chronological order, it may be worth reading right after your last wish. If you are concerned about spoilers, please save it to the end and enjoy it as a retrospective exhibition.

These are the eight books in The Witcher series — at least in English. There are two anthologies, published in 2013 and 2017, consisting of The Witcher’s story written by guest writers in the world of Sapkovsky, but they are in Polish. If you can read them, go ahead. However, they are not considered canons and may have nothing to do with Netflix shows or games.

Interestingly, the only Witcher 3 story missing from the Last Wish collection, the short story “The Road to No Return,” appears in the 2000 collection “Something Ends, Something Begins.” .. This is a name that some gamers are aware of. From a quest with a similar title at the end of The Witcher 3. The story “something ends, something begins” also appears in this collection. Written as a wedding gift to two friends of Sapowski, it describes the wedding of Gerald and Yennefer.

However, this collection is also in Polish. The fan translation for “Something Ends, Something Begins” is obviously pretty accurate, but finding “The Road to No Return” is a bit tricky. It’s also important to recognize that, like the guest author’s anthology, “something ends, something starts” is not considered a canon, so it does not point to the direction of the plot for the entire series. The rest of the stories of Something Ends and Something Begins have nothing to do with The Witcher series.

That said, if you haven’t done so already, you should also check out The Witcher Games. The series may have nothing to do with them, but some of the characters you meet are also present in the book, so the game is an introductory book for encountering and listening to some of them in the show. May be indirectly useful as. The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt is also very well held by 2019 standards, so they’re great too. Henry Cavill, who plays Gerald in the Netflix series, told IGN, despite having played The Witcher 3 many times.

If you’re excited about The Witcher, the above is the best order to read a book, and there are arrangements of storm season options depending on your personal taste. Then dive into the game and discover the wider world of The Witcher!
