Soapbox: Why Harvest Moon 2 GBC is still the best farm game

We recently released our readers’ top 50 Game Boy Color games, and we reviewed some of our favorite GBC strollers. Today, Kerry recalled her favorite agricultural simulation game.

There have been many Harvest Moon games over the years, and almost all formats between SNES and Switch have been enhanced by their agricultural look. Since 1996, the series’ sequels, splits, and derivative works have earned far more revenue than their due share, and inspired the entire genre of slow life Sims, including the incredibly popular Stardew Valley. As games and the number of people who play games increases, so does the complexity of games. Today, farming is just an enjoyable part of a series of interconnected activities and systems designed to keep players engaged and entertained for months ( If not) year – the end.

That’s great. WHO Do not Want to see the game evolve and become more complex over time, combining new ideas with established mechanics in a fun and engaging way? Excellent… I, For one. I like my cute farming games, and I like farming, so that’s why I like to play my Game Boy Color copy of Harvest Moon 2 GBC.

Sometimes ridiculed for ignoring the features already present in its modern console cousin, this more simplified handheld device portal wisely decides to do one thing, rather than being overly fragmented for completeness. This obvious “lack” feature has brought an unhurried pace to my farming days, because my growing list of daily tasks always happens naturally between, around, or for each other’s benefit: I The grass planted will feed the animals in the barn near it; the water from the stream close to the fishing point flows to my crops; the milk sales I collect every morning will help provide for the further improvement and expansion of my small farm funds.

The real magic lies in how this very dedicated work of mine-running a farm-is perfectly combined with the vast amount of freedom the game provides. How much burden I decide to add to myself and when it is almost entirely up to me, these two elements make it very easy to keep up with every casual session of Harvest Moon 2 GBC (I know all I have to do is help my farm), and only The intensity I want (I know I don’t have to work hard all the time, nor do I always have to plant it in the most effective way). I Decide what to grow and where to grow; I Determine when to buy the first chicken; I Decide whether I care about maximizing every opportunity to earn coins, and buy my vegetable seeds based on the value of the growth rate of vegetable seeds to the final selling price, rather than planting just because I like it.

Harvest Moon 2 is just as strong as I want. I Decide what to grow and where to grow; I Decide when to buy my first chicken; I Determine if I care to make the most of every money-making opportunity.

If something is not resolved, it’s not the end of the world – if I miss a day’s watering task because of catching bugs, or if I sow some seeds on till the land and end up wasting them – it’s because there are almost none What I cannot recover through time and effort means that there is nothing to emphasize other than my own responsibility.

HM2 GBC even actively prevents overwork: trying to grow plants that I don’t have the time or energy to take care of will not do any good, if my little farmer’s is too tired to cut it off, or if I just want to do other things today. The relaxed rhythm of the game-from morning to night, from seed to germination, from season to season-gives me no choice but to adjust my expectations to match, and the farm-first gameplay leaves me no choice, just Can hold on and really pay attention to all the small changes that have occurred in my dusty land.

There is a lot of visual feedback, making my daily chores feel like organic tasks. These tasks directly promote the growth of new life on my entire farm, making it easy for me to really happily notice that different crops have different sizes and Shape seeds, how the soil darkens when sprinkled with fresh water, and enjoy the incredible atmospheric sound of raindrops driven by Game Boy, because I let my farmers rush through the wet fields, trying to do all their daily work in a quiet rainy day .

If that doesn’t sound particularly exciting or complicated, Ok. An interesting game is not necessarily these things, in any case, if it is, Harvest Moon 2 will not be a better experience. Few games can enrich myself so deeply, make me proud of my work and professional ethics, set my goals, and then watch them grow in virtual days of easy digestion. I let this grow; I let it all grow. Every kind of flowers and plants. Each crop was planted after I had cultivated the bare soil, and then I harvested it with my own hands. Every weed was dealt with as soon as it appeared, and I pulled it out by myself. My hard work has not only brought about the gamification of a series of rewards and events, but also brought tangible changes. This feeling The situation is improving And-thanks to the game’s unwavering focus on farming-I am always on the right track and always doing enough. In a way, the game is sometimes hard to break free is beneficial. Sincere without the morbid sweetness that usually accompanies.

More than two decades have passed since the game was released. Harvest Moon, agricultural simulation games and the entire game have developed in various fascinating directions, and we have all benefited from the diversity and inclusiveness that these new additions bring. But I will always appreciate the clear vision and soothing simplicity of my little Game Boy farm. I am busy traveling to the town every morning to collect all the eggs laid by my hens in the barn. Although not many, but all of them are mine, which makes me very happy.
