It’s been a month already. So it’s time to take another look at his eShop from last month. July was a pretty big month for physical RPG releases, but the eShop had quite a few hidden nuggets you might have passed by. Again, we picked the best for you!

As always for eShop Selects — we’re focused on the download-only games we’ve reviewed, as we want to showcase special gems you may have missed in the Xenoblade Chronicles 3 hype!

Let’s start with some notable titles that didn’t make the top three.

Honorable Mention:

From classic-inspired indies to amazing classic re-releases, here’s a nice little selection that’s all worth your time:

Weird Gardening (Switch eShop)

Weird Gardening (Switch eShop)

the publisher: iceberg interactive / Developer: bad viking

Release date: July 28, 2022 (united states of america) / July 28, 2022 (UK/EU)

We’re really not sure what to call weird gardening. Narrative game, puzzle game, mystery, herbology sim? But one thing we do know is that it’s growing.

Part of the game’s appeal is this unusual combination of occult mystery and botanical cultivation, with hints and gameplay dripping through great writing. It’s like the intrigue of the ivy, and each time a new leaf sprouts, you’re caught up in the experience.

Nothing more to say, leaving an 8/10 review to convince you that Weird Gardening is the right kind of foliage for you.

Capcom Arcade Second Stadium (Switch eShop)

Capcom Arcade Second Stadium (Switch eShop)

the publisher: Capcom / Developer: Capcom

Release date: July 22, 2022 (united states of america) / July 22, 2022 (UK/EU)

Is this a little unfair? Capcom Arcade Second Stadium is technically 32 games. But it’s a package of 32 different titles detailing Capcom’s history, and you can’t say no to a bit of nostalgia.

Packed with fighting games, shooters, sports games, and puzzle titles, this game is a great old history lesson in Capcom’s arcade history, just like the first arcade stadium. Some of the highlights here are: LED storm, dragon king, gun smokePunickyWhen Darkstalkers: Warriors of the NightIt’s a quirky arcade sweets shop that makes you want to play with a little change.

The nostalgia and excellent emulations of this package are the reasons I gave this compilation an 8/10 rating.

Azure Striker Gunvolt 3 (Switch eShop)

Azure Striker Gunvolt 3 (Switch eShop)

the publisher: Inti Creates / Developer: Inti Creates

Release date: July 28, 2022 (united states of america) / July 28, 2022 (UK/EU)

Can you believe it’s been 6 years since Blue Thunder Gunvolt 2?There were other games to a wider extent Blue Thunder Gunvolt series since then, the third sequel is what we’ve been waiting for. And thunder certainly hits him three times.

The biggest difference in the third game is that you primarily control a sword-wielding Kirin who can throw talismans at enemies, but Gunvolt can be “tagged” at any time. Gorgeous pixel art action is buttery smooth. The series continues to impress with every new entry, capturing the speed of its lighting Rockman The action we always crave.

You can’t stop playing, and its replayability is just one reason why it’s the #1 eShop game of July. Our very positive reviews should further confirm why it deserves that spot.

< Nintendo Life eShop Select - June 2022

How the eShop Select Top 3 are determined: At the end of each month, the Nintendo Life staff votes for their favorite title from among the games selected by the editorial department. To qualify for this list, these games must have been released as digital-only Nintendo Switch eShop titles in that particular month and reviewed on Nintendo Life. Select eligible games based on review score.

Staff members are then asked to vote for the three games they believe deserve a spot at the top of the list. 1st choice is 3 points, 2nd choice is 2 points, 3rd choice is 1 point. These votes are tallied to create a top 3 list, with the overall winner taking home the top prize for the month.
