It’s been a while, but the whole ManaVoid team (including myself) is excited. Rainbow Billy: Leviathan’s Curse It’s finally here on Xbox One. And since last year or so has been particularly desolate for most of us, I don’t think we’ll have the time to release a non-violent game that defends acceptance, inclusiveness, and compassion.
Saving the world from giant monsters by fighting enemies and recruiting party members is a fairly familiar RPG realm. However, Rainbow Billy, Things are a little different … and not just because they bring color back to the black and white world.
Instead of a full-blown slug fest that defeats the stuffing of adorable cartoon creatures, the “battle” unfolds from emotionally mysterious heart to heart. Your goal is not to defeat the enemy, but to listen to the enemy’s concerns, choose the right words, bring color back to their hearts and make friends with them. Plus, you don’t have to grind the battle to level up. We provide moral support (and candies) to get to know our peers better and strengthen our friendship ties.
This decision to create a compelling, non-violent “conflict” is based on a team decision that stands out from the majority of combat or violence-oriented titles on the market. Moreover, it makes much more sense to talk about empathizing with yourself and others.
Similarly, we didn’t want that message of accepting others to be hollow. In partnership with Skybound Games and the non-profit RAD, we’ve found a sweet spot between a serious and accurate portrayal of the struggle between healthy cartoon Heizink and mental health, especially for characters with a particular gender identity.
We also wanted to extend these in-game acceptance and inclusive themes to players, so most of the development revolved around making the game accessible to as many people as possible.
Our art team has paid special attention to the design, shaders and color palette so that even colorblind players can feel the visual satisfaction of changing colors little by little in the world. We also paid special attention to developing multiple customizable difficulty settings that do not reduce the strategic complexity of conflicts and puzzles.
In addition, we’ve made dialogue easier, including font options and tactical text boxes suitable for dyslexia throughout localization. We’ve also adjusted the subtleties of camera movements, animations, and respawn locations to make it easier for anyone to pick up and play the game.
If you want to learn more about these features, technical director Alexis Lessard has created a Twitter thread to elaborate on accessibility initiatives. You can check it Here!!
It ’s really heartwarming to see Rainbow Billy Resonating with players from all disciplines, their support is essential to making the game what it is. When I say I can wait to finally experience the same cuteness as those who experienced our demo, I think I’ll speak for the whole team-overloaded barks and tier jars The moment of the car!
